Originally a term used in the 15C to refer to the largest Carracks in the Royal Navy. By the early 16C it was part of an early rating system denoting ships mounting approximately 40 guns, under Charles I they became ships of the Second Rank. Threedecks categorises Great Ships as 1st Rates prior to 1604 and Second Rates thereafter.
