His three commissions by VAdm Sir Edward Hughes, CinC East Indies, all confirmed by Admiralty on 29 Jan 1783 (ADM 6/23,p.22), were: 4th Lieut., HMS Superb, 3d rate/74 guns, on 02 Jan 1782; Master & Commander, HMS Cumbustion, Fireship, on 01 Mar 1782; and Captain, HMS Hero, 3d rate/74 guns on 19 May 1782.
