Byng, before his posting to the Redoubt had also been commander of the HMS Artois (1794) during 1795 when her regular captain Sir Edmund Nagle was ashore on personal business ( Nagle was the nephew and ward of the Rt Hon Edmund Burke and was often assisting Burke with the French Emigres, especially dealing with the needs of le Comte d'Artois and others at the Penn School in Beaconsfield).
