I do not have a copy of his original commission as a 5th Lieut., probably issued overseas and confirmed by Admiralty ca. 25-28 Oct 1779 (ADM 6/22, p. 42) but on 16 May 1779 he was commissioned 1st Lieut., HMS Aurora (6th/28) by VAdm Byron with this commission confirmed by Admiralty on 10 Nov 1779 (ADM 6/22, p. 48).
