He was commissioned 14 July 1777 by Lord Howe from Midshipman, HMS Eagle, 4th/64, to 4th Lieutenant, HMS Raisonable, 4th/64, at New York (confirmed by Admiralty 29 Dec 1777 [ADM 6/21, p.349])
