Francis L'Montais is not listed by either Syrett & DiNardo or by Bonner-Smith. Franics L'Montais was a nephew of VAdm Clark Gayton (ADM 1/240) acting Lieutenant in HMS Antelope (Gayton's flagship) when on 14 Feb 1776 Gayton commisioned him Lieutenant commanding HM Armed Schooner Porcupine (ADM 6/21, p.252, confirmed 24 Jan 1777). On 25 June 1776 VAdm Gayton posted him as Lieutenant, commanding HM Armed Brig Badger (ADM 6/21, p.387, confirmed 07 Apr 1778). When HM Armed Brig Badger was re-established as HM [brig-rigged] Sloop Badger on 11 Nov 1776, L'Montais apparently returned to the flagship where, as 2d Lieut., VAdm Gayton promoted him to Commander, HMS Stork, Sloop, on 03 May 1777 (ADM 6/21, p.305, confirmed 27 Aug 1777) [Peter Rainier the 1st Lieut. was promoted Commander, HMS Ostrich, Sloop, the same day. He was still commanding HMS Stork, Sloop, in Sep 1779 when it arrived at Pensacola much shattered by a gale [hurricane?] and was condemned there.
