Navy officers were recorded alphabetically and when a junior officer of the same name was added they were given a number to distinguish between them, ergo James(2) Murray and James(4) Murray there would also have been a James(1) Murray and James(3) Murray and so on

The date for Lieutenant should be 1809-06-14.
The date 1790-11-16 is for James(2) Murray This person is James(4) Murray
