His initial commission on 20 Aug 1777 was as Lieutenant, HMS Shark, Sloop (ADM 6/21, p.304). Next he was appointed 5th Lieut, HMS Blenheim, 2d rate/90, on 11 Aug 1778 (ADM 6/21, p.436). His orders to command HM Liberty, Cutter, were dated 30 May 1783 (ADM 2/114, p.429)
