The 1799 signal book in the collection of the University of Rhode Island is inscribed "To Lieut. John Batt, Acting Captain of His Majesty's Ship La Sybille...2d Sept 1799." The United Service Journal says he held this command from sometime in the summer of 1799 (after July 6th) to 23rd March 1800.Edward Collier's entry in the Naval Biographical Dictionary says that Collier served under "Captain John Batt" in the Arrogant in 1802, and George Haye's entry says "from May 1802 until April 1807 [Haye] was...Midshipman and Master's Mate...in the St Fiorenzo 36, Capts, Joseph Bingham, John Batt..." but I wonder if this isn't an error—"Batt, Bingham" for "(Arthur) Batt Bingham", or "John Batt" for "John Bastard."
