Bowie was Lieutenant on HMS Royal Sovereign and HMS Tonnant. Transferred to Cork station with admiral Benjamin Hallowell. Was captain of the Minerva and the Kite, revenue cruizers.

John Bowie scuttled his gunboat nº23 on the river Ebro at Amposta on the 5th of august 1813 whilst under fire from the french. several crew were killed but Bowie kept a cool head under heavy fire and was able to save the lives of the rest. Source: united service magazine, vol 46, page 74
