In 1848 when he received his General Service Medal he was listed as a Volunteer, 1st class, serving on the Royal Sovereign at Trafalgar

According to the Trafalgar Ancestors on the National Archive site, he was a Volunteer 1st Class, not a midshipman.

archibald was w/ admiral collingwood on royal sovereign as a midshipman during battle of trafalgar, he enlisted 6 months earlier , aged 13yr , as a midshipman
