While assigned to the frigate Flora, he was reported to have lost an arm while assisting the galley Pigot, which had gone aground within range of the American battery at Bristol Ferry, Rhode Island, on 30 May 1778. See Naval Documents of the American Revolution, vol. 12 (2013), p. 498. On 27 July 1778, it was reported that he "still continues incapable of duty". See Naval Documents of the American Revolution, vol. 13 (2019), p. 526.
