Providence Gazette June 26, 1813
On the 6th of June, on board the United States frigate Chesapeake,James Lawrence, Esq; Captain of the frigate, aged about 30 years; leaving an amiable and bereaved widow, and three infant children, to the protection of Heaven, and the gratitude of his country. Every page of our Naval annals bear record to his gallantry, science, genius, and humanity. His funeral was solemnized in a foreign land with all the demonstrations of grief and esteem, which could have been paid to the best beloved and respected fellow citizen. And although an official annunciation of his decease had not been received here, on Saturday the flags at the Navy Yard, the forts, gun-houses, and public buildings, and all the vessels, were hoisted half-mast and continued thus through the day.
