1821 - 1901.
Served in Baltic and Black Sea; Baltic Campaign of 1854 aboard blockship Hogue: attack on Bomarsund where “He designed the sledges for dragging up the [naval] guns” for the siege of the forts.

Black Sea and Azoff 1855 – in command of Lynx.
Actions in the Straits of Kertch and attack on Fort Arabat; attack on Fanagoria etc.
8th June 1855 – proceedings in the Straits of Kertch highly approved of.
13th June 1855 – gazetted with praise for operations in the Sea of Azoff.
1st Nov. 1855 – gazetted for further operations in the Sea of Azoff, with praise for his zeal and activity.
26 Apr. 1856 – memorial from Admiral Houston Stewart strongly recommends him.

Knight of the Legion of Honour, France and Turkish Order of the Medjidieh, 5th Class – for service during the Crimean War.
Became a famous Confederate blockade runner in the Americal Civil War on the Venus and the Hansa - known as "the Captain" or "Captain Murray".
Companion of the Order of the Bath, 1874.
Lived at Hall Court, Botley, Hants. and died there 1st April 1901; buried there on 6th April.
Death reported with Obituary in Hampshire Telegraph, 6th April 1901.
