Apologies. My references above to vol 14 of Naval Documents of the American Revolution is an error. It should be to vol. 13 (2019). the page numbers are correct for vol 13.

As an Agent for Transports, Knowles accompanied Sir Peter Parker's expedition from New York to Newport, Rhode Island, in December 1776, See Naval Documents of the American Revolution, vol. 7 (1976), p. 267

As Lieutenant, he was serving as Agent for Transports at Newport, Rhode Island, in August 1778. See Naval Documents of the American Revolution, vol. 14 (2020), pp. 525, 767n, 771n, 776. David Syrett, Shipping in the American War, 1775-83 (1970), p. 40, notes that of the 20 officers who served in this role during the American War, only two--Knowles and John Bourmaster--achieved flag rank.
