At the head of the frigates "Aigle" and "Marie" of the Compagnie des Indes , his employer , he left Lorient on July 19, 1738 to explore the lands of the southern hemisphere which were believed at that time to counterbalance the weight of the lands of the northern hemisphere . We had the hope of finding temperate lands there . In any case, this was the first expedition to the southern hemisphere explicitly designed for scientific purposes . On January 1, 1739 , he saw through the mist and snowfall a glacier and snow covering a land . The explorers tried to land , but the "pack" prevented them from doing so . They had to face a particularly cold southern summer . After nine days of trying under difficult conditions , they set out to seek their unknown continent further east . The navigation instruments of the time did not allow a reliable determination of longitude , and Bouvet recorded the island at about 6 ° East, under the name of "Île de la Circoncision" (due to the date of discovery1 ) .Finding nothing further to the east , blocked to the south by the pack , Bouvet had to resume his journey to Cape Town to eat , then return to Lorient . Thanks to this expedition , he was the first to describe the gigantic tabular icebergs , only found in extreme southern latitudes , previously unknown densities of whales and a strange animal : the penguin .

Circumcision Island , it was later renamed in his name : Bouvet Island and came under Norwegian Sovereignty .
