September 10, 1694; French Captain Saint Clair, commander of le Gaillard and leader of a squadron of four French war ships (l’ Aigle, le Favory, le Prudent, le Gaillard) was defeated at the battle of Ferryland in the Newfoundland against British Captain William Holman, commander of the William and Mary galley, private man of war having letters of marque and sixteen guns.
