On the 11th of April last, while Cap PATER was on board the VICTORY receiving orders, his ship the CA IRA took fire and was entirely consumed notwithstanding the utmost exertions were made by lt MATTHEWS and the other officers and men to extinguish the flames. It appears that the fire arose from accident and seemed to have been occasionned by a bottle of combustible matter improperly kept in the carpenters cabin, on a shelf fixed against the bulkhead witch separated it from the wing were a quantity of oakum was lodged. Cap PATER, his officers and men were acquitted of all blame for the lost of the ship. [Public record office – ADMIRALTY (ADM 12/25) f 413 & 414]
