The HM Sloop Viper wrecked in the St Lawrence River during the American War was the snow-rigged Viper, Sloop, launched 31 Mar 1756, re-commissioned 13 Apr 1775 and sent to North America. Escorting a convoy to Quebec on 15 Dec 1779 in a snow squall she saw breakers ahead, missed stays and ran over a ledge, and was abandoned as a wreck. Commander John Augustus, Lord Hervey commanded. Sir Gordon DRUMMOND when age 9 yrs., in 1781, nearly lost his life aboard the war sloop VIPER in the St Lawrence River. Would this sloop be the same one? Was the Viper salvaged on this occasion?
